Listening to music, watching films, video games: the sound quality is of paramount importance in most current uses of the PC. The choice of speakers should be a reflection of their uses.
No need to have PC speakers of competition if your sound card cannot support them. Conversely, it would be a shame to buy low-end PC speakers if you have a very powerful sound card.
The type of speakers
- 2 speakers system: cheap, average quality, the lack of subwoofer reduces the quality of sound.
- The 2.1 system: 2 speakers and 1 subwoofer, some of these systems are of excellent quality, wide range of prices.
- The 4.1 system: 4 speakers and 1 subwoofer, for spacial sound around you. Recommended system for video games in 3D to better identify the enemy in space.
- The 5.1 system: 1 additional center speaker. Recommended for viewing DVD which are mostly encoded in 5.1.
Make your choice based on your needs, no need to opt for the 4.1 or the 5.1 if you do not watch movies or do not play on your computer. Don’t forget the cluttering…
The quality of sound
- The operating frequencies: the more the frequency range is extended, the more speakers are capable of reproducing a wide spectrum of sound, more serious than acute. Check especially the quality of the subwoofer, which reproduces the low frequencies. The human ear perceives frequencies ranging from about 20-25 Hz to 18-20 kHz. Choose speakers which have similar frequency ranges.
- The labels: there are private labels as THX, which may refer to your choice of speaker quality. Warning, these certifications are not official.
- Tests: the best way to evaluate the sound quality is much better to listen to the speakers. This is not always possible at the store and not possible if you buy online. Reading reviews can give you a first approach.
The power
It is measured in Watts. Among the different types of Watts, it’s the Watt RMS that has to be taken into account. This unit measures the quality, diameter and number of speakers. Usually 10 to 70 Watts RMS.
Don’t deduct that the more the Watt RMS is high, and the more the PC speaker quality is high. The power and quality are two independent features. It is better to have less powerful speakers, but that don’t buzz.
The connectivity
- PC speakers connection: for 2 and 2.1 speakers systems, a stereo analog input is enough. For 4.1, 5.1 systems, you will need a digital input of the S/PDIF type.
- Connection between speakers: Elements of the speakers are connected by various cables. There are wireless connection modes, but only for 5.1 speakers systems.
Accessories
To control the volume and bass without using your computer, some speakers have a remote control or “pod”.
