The NSA helped Microsoft to Secure Windows 7

November 23rd, 2009 | Posted in Softwares | No Comments »

nsa_seal-300x299We usually involve the mysterious U.S. intelligence agency NSA (National Security Agency) to feats of espionage, high technology, but the organization is also very involved in improving software security.

They even advised Microsoft during the development of Windows 7.

According to Richard Schaeffer of the NSA, it is important that the agency is cooperating with Microsoft and other software publishers because the growing dependence of “computer products of the private sector” could threaten the national security of the United States.

By creating and maintaining high security standards, the U.S. government agency hopes to reduce the danger to the “growing threat of cyber-attacks”. Even if it seems from a good intention, when we see the words “NSA” and “Microsoft” in the same sentence has something a little disturbing.

November 16th, 2009 | Posted in Laptops, Softwares | No Comments »

Asus has released a guide to upgrade to Windows 7 for the Eee PC 1000H netbook, which is far from being the latest netbook. Anyway, it includes an Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive (other former models have half the storage space) among others. Although Asus has already stopped manufacturing the Eee PC 1000H for some time, it’s nice to see they care about the interests of their clients with this guide.

Windows 7 reduces the battery life of netbooks

November 12th, 2009 | Posted in Laptops | No Comments »

According to various tests on the web, it seems that Windows 7 will reduce considerably the battery life of netbooks compared to Windows XP. Thus, the battery life of the Toshiba mini NB205 goes from 9:24 with XP to 8:51 with 7. Same punishment with the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA: battery life of 5:40 under XP, 4:43 under 7. Finally, with an HP Mini 311, it’s 5:43 of battery life under XP, and 4:52 under Windows 7.

Note that the tests were performed using the netbook in a continuous surfing the net via Wi-Fi.

List of Windows commands

November 4th, 2009 | Posted in Softwares, Tips and Tricks | No Comments »

Here is the list of the main commands to use under Windows XP, Vista and 7.

  • Some commands are dangerous (the example of SYSKEY) and can cause problems that can lead to formatting.
  • Other commands are not executable on Windows XP or earlier versions, I have not tried them all. Contributors are free to make any necessary corrections.
  • Under Vista and 7, “Run” is not visible in the Start menu, you can show it by following this tip.
  • You can also add your own commands, see this tip.

How to show the Run command on Start menu in Windows Vista and 7

November 4th, 2009 | Posted in Softwares, Tips and Tricks | No Comments »

When you are under Windows Vista and 7 operating systems, you will notice that the command “Run”, which is quite customary and helpful with its little brother XP, does not exist.

You should therefore make it operational (this trick also applies to Windows XP).

To make this change, here is the solution:

  • Right click on the taskbar and select “Properties” from the menu that appears.
  • In the new window that appears, select the “Start Menu” and click [Customize].
  • In the menu of the new window, find the heading “Run Command” and check the box that is placed in front.
  • Confirm with [OK].
  • Now just start again from the Start menu and see that the command “Run” is there.

You can also type your commands directly in the “Search” from Start Menu.
