Mandriva launches InstantOn, an OS that boots in 10 seconds

Why load Windows or other complex operating systems when you just want to send an email or surf the Web a few moments? With a simplified interface than enough for some uses, many manufacturers incorporate into their laptops and motherboards small operating systems that load only a few essential softwares and thus provide an immediate access, or almost, to Internet. Mandriva released its InstantOn, a mini operating system based on Mandriva 2010, which allows to connect in less than ten seconds to Firefox and Thunderbird.

How to convert DVD to DivX under Ubuntu

HandBrake is a good software to convert videos, such as DVD to DivX.

Note: It seems that since version 0.9.4, HandBrake does not support most AVI and OGG containers, and no longer supports the Xvid codec.

Haleron goes against the grain, with their operating system, Ocean, part of the Linux family, but this one is special because it can run Google Android and Windows applications. Although Windows compatibility is not at 100%, it should be correct.

How to install flashplayer under Debian

debian-4-s-To install the flashplayer plugin on Debian, first add the repository: deb etch-backports main contrib in your sources.list. To do this open a console, log in as root and type:

For Debian Etch:
echo "deb http://www.backports.org/debian etch-backports main contrib" >> /etc/apt/sources.list

For Debian Lenny:
echo "deb http://www.backports.org/debian lenny-backports main contrib" >> /etc/apt/sources.list

Then import the authentication key:
wget -O - http://backports.org/debian/archive.key | apt-key add -
Or manually:
gpg --keyserver hkp://subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys 16BA136C
gpg --export | apt-key add -

Then reload:
aptitude update

And finally install the plugin:
aptitude install flashplugin-nonfree

openSUSE 11.2: last RC before the final

opensuse-logoPublication of a final Release Candidate for GNU/Linux openSUSE 11.2 before the final scheduled for November 12, 2009.

The day of Thursday was marked by the release of Ubuntu 9.10. Other Linux public distributions biding their time with Fedora 12, Mandriva Linux 2010 next week or more openSUSE 11.2. And it is just yesterday that the latest version of the RC distribution supported by Novell has been published. The opportunity of a final test before November 12.

Compared to version RC1, RC2 that includes a Linux kernel 2.6.31.5 and Xorg Server 1.6.5. Software packages have been updated to include Firefox 3.5.4, the recent SeaMonkey 2.0 Internet suite or the Samba 3.4.2 server network. These are points which are mentioned in the announcement. Bugs are also yet to be corrected.

The default file system is proposed EXT4 and the KDE 4.3 desktop environment (unless they choose a specific LiveCD). Further information on the new features are given here. The RC2 for openSUSE 11.2 can be obtained here.
