Why load Windows or other complex operating systems when you just want to send an email or surf the Web a few moments? With a simplified interface than enough for some uses, many manufacturers incorporate into their laptops and motherboards small operating systems that load only a few essential softwares and thus provide an immediate access, or almost, to Internet. Mandriva released its InstantOn, a mini operating system based on Mandriva 2010, which allows to connect in less than ten seconds to Firefox and Thunderbird.

This operating system is designed to be both simple and ergonomically, it offers an array of applications meeting the needs of all: a Web browser (Mozilla Firefox), a program for reading emails (Mozilla Thunderbird) and a file browser (with the possibility of playing video, audio and photos). We can install it alongside Windows or a Linux distribution. InstantOn provides support for 3G and Wi-Fi controllers managed by Mandriva 2010.

Available for download for 9.90 euros, InstantOn can also be obtained on a USB flash drive for an extra of 15 euros. In parallel, Mandriva offers to manufacturers an OEM version, they can customize at their colors and install softwares of their choice.
