DORA robotic arm for wheelchairs

Students from the University of Massachusetts (Lowell), has released a low cost robotic arm that was specially designed to open doors. Named DORA (Door Opening Robotic Arm), the robotic arm works well with 14 different handles in 85% of tests where you have to push the door and 65% where it should be drawn. It seems that the handicapped people will find it very useful in the near future if it is implemented on a large scale.

The HUBO FX-1 biped robot from HUBOLab is 2 meters tall and weighs 150kg. The HUBO FX-1 robot is big enough to carry a weight of 100kg. It can walk forward, backward, sideways and can rotate using an integrated joystick. This robot seems to be quite comfortable when you sit inside, but it has a major disadvantage compared to the Honda ASIMO – it can not climb stairs.

Mitsubishi released their range of car Lancer Evolution, but they also come into the world of robots with Wakamaru. Of course, you will pay a price of $15,000, but Wakamaru is like a dog and has been specially designed for family life. It will move according to your lifestyle, wake you up in the morning and the robot includes 10,000 words from everyday life to facilitate communication. The facial recognition technology integrated into it to recognize up to 2 people in the house, as its owners, and up to 8 other people at a glance. The sensors of collision detection integrated ensure that it will not hit anywhere.

ROLA intelligent home-care robot

rolaThe ROLA (Robot Of Living Aid) is an intelligent home-care robot has been developed by the National Chiao Tung University of Taiwan. Able to understand Mandarin, Taiwanese and a little bit of English, ROLA keeps an eye on the elderly occupants of a home and it can send distress messages automatically in the event of an accident to a family mobile phone or call an ambulance. This is possible thanks to its live video feed, which allows people to differentiate between a true emergency and a false alarm. Price: for now, it costs about $100,000.

Genibo: the successor of Aibo?

Genibo is a new robot dog developed by the company and distributed by Dasatech. Successor of the Aibo of Sony, the new electronic dog obeys the finger and the eye through recognition systems video and voice interpretation. It has an artificial intelligence with multiple expressions to communicate, can learn and mature under the guidance of its owner. Its dimensions are 334 x 300 x 192 mm for 1.5 Kg. Available in four colors, Genibo costs a price of €2,000!

ROPID robot by ROBO GARAGE

Tomotaka Takahashi (Robo Garage) to whom we owe the famous Evolta robot of Panasonic and many records of all kinds, we return today with ROPID (combination of words Robot and Rapid). This new robot of 38 cm has the ability to jump feet attached a few inches (8 cm to be exact), it is also equipped with a voice recognition system can identify 8 verbal commands up to 3 m of distance.

Remember the BigDog quadruped robot that does not appear to be disrupted by a kick that it took on the side, and was able to maintain its balance?

The same people behind the BigDog robot created PetMan, and this biped version can dynamically balanced with a way to walk like humans. See it for yourself in action on the treadmill – will we see soon Nike or Adidas as a sponsor for its shoes?

Amio biped robot

amioRobots are becoming increasingly common nowadays, and the Amio robot from AIM Lab has been specially developed to be a real biped humanoid robot, including 36 DOFs, a height of 150cm and weighing 45kg. The robot walked at a speed of 1km/h and is assisted by two CCD cameras for vision, 8 tilt sensors throughout the body, and 4 sensors resistance force by up to locate the ZMP (Zero Moment Point). The software integrated vision and speech aid Amio to guess the emotional state of a person. We do not know when the robot can walk faster, but these developments will help improve human-robot interaction in the future.

Subaru AV-S1 cleaning robot

Subaru has released the AV-S1 cleaning robot, which can clean up to 3000 m²/h – three times more than their human counterparts. Features include lots of sensors to help prevent the AV-S1 cleaning robots to maintain a distance of about 20 cm between them and the surrounding walls. The cleaning robots are smart enough to take the elevator to perform their tasks on different floors.
