Google Adsense: medium rectangle or large rectangle?
October 30th, 2009 | Posted in Advertising, Tips and Tricks | 2 Comments »
When we talk about optimization, we often encourage you to use the ad format Medium Rectangle 300 x 250. But we also mention that the greater ad units typically offer better performance. Consequently, some publishers have asked the following question: “What format should we use, medium rectangle 300 x 250 or large rectangle 336 x 280?”
We have forwarded this issue, for which we detailed the benefits of each ad format:
- The medium rectangle 300 x 250 is a format widely supported. Advertisers often use when designing campaigns to promote their brand, or Rich Media campaigns. The choice of this format and joint use of text ads and image ads can generate more opportunities for targeting sites, thereby increasing competition for your ad space and thereby increase your income over time.
- The large rectangle 336 x 280 tends to generate a clickthrough rate higher because of its greater size. Its performances are often very satisfactory when it is integrated into the content of pages with lots of text.
We have found that optimizing the performance of these two ad formats can vary from one site to another. Therefore, we can not advise on all publishers to favor one format over another. As with all other customization options, we recommend that you test each ad format for 3 to 4 weeks, and measure performance using custom channels.
Google Adsense: 1 million affiliate sites for to 1.5 million advertisers
October 30th, 2009 | Posted in Advertising | No Comments »
For best results from Google at September 30 that comes out of the crisis with a war chest of $22 billion with which it will maintain its “crusade of the acquisition”.
I will focus on a single figure (new to my knowledge) delivered during the press conference related: 1 million sites are partners in the AdSense advertising service.
They are other sites than specific Google sites for the 1.5 million Google advertisers who use AdWords, the advertising service from Google that allows the management of advertising to those sites by advertisers.
The average monthly income for these affiliate sites is 600 dollars (600 million / month / 1 million sites).
This figure was ultimately very little sense: it is a Long Tail phenomenon and aggregation: there an exponential decrease of income per site.
Indeed, a behemoth like AOL accounted for 10% alone 4 years ago: this type of site kills on average as they withdrew from the calculation even if the magnitude of this phenomenon has certainly diminished over time with growth of Google.
These figures are certainly Google’s largest advertising agency in the world in terms of contractual relationships with partners and customers. It’s 100% sure if we accept the principle that each click is a separate transaction, be treated as such between an advertiser and a publisher: it is then billions of daily transactions that are managed …
Google clicks rising, the CPC falling
October 26th, 2009 | Posted in Advertising | No Comments »
Announcing its results for the 3rd quarter 2009, the Web giant Google has announced that its clicks on Google Adsense and partners were up to +14% over the same quarter of 2008.
Meanwhile the CPC (Cost per Click) is down -6% compared to the same quarter of 2008, but it is positive upwards of 5% compared to 2nd quarter of 2009.
Google reported revenues of 5.94 billion dollars for the 3rd quarter of 2009 alone, an increase of +7% over Q3 2008.
Adsense advertising on publishing partners sites reported 1.80 billion alone, or about 30% of total revenues for Google.
It is not surprising to see an increase of clicks on the search engine because if you remember Google was testing early August to bring the ads to natural results.
Well Jonathan Rosenberg (Google’s vice-president of products) has confirmed that this change had increased the CPC:
“The biggest things, probably in order, or close to order, were the UI tweaks that we did for results pages. We changed the maximum width, decreasing the spacing between the search results and the right hand side ads on wide screen. With that it increased the click-through rate on the right hand side ads and I think we did that some time around the second week in August.”
